Tried learning in Duolingo years ago, remember some words/pronunciation/grammar but the educational structure wasn’t as useful as this app. Duo focused on basic vocab versus basic conversation, which I agree with learning how to speak first then diving into understanding the grammar, like a child would learn any language, by listening to their parents and what’s being said around them. Deducted one star because “míle” wasn’t registering. Was trying to say it all different ways, even incorrectly. Pronouncing it slow or fast, with a deep voice and a high voice, and it wasn’t registering that I was even saying the word. “Go raibh míle maith agat” had me hung up for 5 minutes. App is otherwise great and registers everything else and notices the slight mispronunciations for all the other words I’ve learned thus far. A big positive is that not only the phonetics are written out but you can actually hear someone sounding it out which is rare in these apps but I’m not confident if I’m actually saying it right. I feel like I would be more confident of the app explained the alphabet before introducing sentences. This is definitely an app for people who have a bit more knowledge in the language than an absolute beginner. So I’m starting from zero with no osmotic environment for it at all. But I figure a lot of Irish American descendants may want to know what this app is like for someone who wants to bring Irish back into the family culture but has no prior exposure (beyond well known songs, maybe)—so far, it’s EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for. Duolingo was not cutting it for the level of pronunciation engagement and detail I needed. The dialect option—being able to choose which dialect—is also awesome. My maternal side is from Antrim and my paternal side is Cork, so I actually had to think about which one I wanted to pursue from the ground up. Very useful. But yeah, this app is clearly superior to any other convenient Irish learning tool I’ve ever used so far (I haven’t had time to pursue a live teacher yet). I’m only a couple lessons in but already I’ve corrected pronunciation and I definitely see myself using this excitedly (not timidly) for more than 10 min a day and retaining that pronunciation more than I ever did with other apps. There’s also phonetic visual breakdown of the pronunciation so that my lil English speaking brain can start to reduce what each letter and letter combo sounds like down to its simplest, and in different usages, which is something I absolutely need to see repetitively under the Irish in plain bold letters in front of my eyeballs since obviously Irish means some totally different sounds on the alphabet and renders our usual “sounding out” counterintuitive. That’s the best way I can put it as a total laywoman right now! All in all, this app is clearly a labor of love and so worth the upgraded membership because of how smoothly the first few lessons have gone. Thanks for making this so accessible even to a dumb and far-removed American!
